Protein bars with no added sugar are a good snack for people avoiding sugar, watching their weight, restricting carb intake or who are health conscious. By choosing the right protein bars, they can be a healthier alternative to candy bars for satisfying your sweet tooth and hunger while helping you to better manage your weight or blood glucose level.

What are Sugar Substitutes?

Sugar substitutes offer the sweetness of sugar but with low or virtually no calories. Generally, there are 4 types of sugar substitutes:

1. Natural Sweeteners

3. Sugar Alcohols

Sugar alcohols (or polyols) are carbohydrates derived from plants such as fruits and vegetables, and can also be manufactured. Despite the name, they are neither sugar nor alcohol. Although not calorie free, they contain fewer calories than regular sugar.

Sugar alcohols are incompletely digested in the small intestine. When they reach the large intestine, they are fermented by colonic bacteria. As a result, consumption (or over consumption) of sugar alcohols can cause side effects such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and abdominal pain. If you have a pre-existing gastrointestinal condition, you may want to avoid or limit your consumption of sugar alcohols.

Stevia is a perennial shrub, native to Paraguay, but also extensively grown in other countries. It contains glycosides, compounds that are 100-300 times sweeter than regular sugar. Stevioside, the primary glycoside, and other related compounds including rebaudioside A, are extracted from stevia leaves and used as a non-caloric sweetener.

Lo han guo or monk fruit is a member of the gourd family. It is grown in China, and is used as a food, beverage and traditional medicine. Monogrosides are the compounds that contribute to the sweetness of lo han guo extract. The main component, mogroside V is more than 300 times sweeter than sugar, and low in calories.
